How to Book Air India First Class on Aeroplan from India

By Aadil Bandukwala & Dhimant Negandhi·Updated 2026-04-28·5 min read

Why Aeroplan beats Maharaja Club for First

Maharaja Club, Air India's home programme, uses dynamic award pricing that frequently asks for 200,000+ miles for a one-way Delhi to London in First. Aeroplan, on the same seat, often prices the same flight around 100,000 to 110,000 Aeroplan points one-way plus modest taxes and fuel surcharges (Aeroplan does not pass through Air India's full surcharges).

The trade-off: Aeroplan inventory is partner-award inventory, which Air India releases more conservatively than to its own members. Availability is the constraint, not price.

    Funding Aeroplan from India

Aeroplan has a small, well-defined set of feeders for Indian cardholders. There are exactly four. Anything you read elsewhere claiming Amex MR India transfers to Aeroplan is wrong.

    • Axis Magnus Burgundy → Aeroplan at 5:4. The strongest direct ratio in the Indian market. 100,000 EDGE Reward Points become 80,000 Aeroplan points.
    • Axis Atlas → Aeroplan at 1:2. Atlas EDGE Miles transfer at 2x most other Axis cards. 50,000 EDGE Miles become 100,000 Aeroplan points.
    • HDFC Infinia / Diners Club Black / BizBlack → Aeroplan at 2:1. 100,000 HDFC Reward Points become 50,000 Aeroplan points via the SmartBuy / partner transfer flow.
    • Marriott Bonvoy → Aeroplan at 3:1, with a 5,000 mile bonus per 60,000 Bonvoy transferred. 60,000 Bonvoy becomes 25,000 Aeroplan (20,000 + 5,000 bonus). Always transfer in 60K blocks to capture the bonus. Bonvoy itself can be earned directly on Bonvoy-cobranded card spend in India.

Mileage cost (Aeroplan, one-way Air India First)

    • India to Europe (Delhi to London): ~100,000 to 110,000 Aeroplan points + taxes.
    • India to North America (Delhi to Newark, Mumbai to JFK): ~130,000 Aeroplan points + taxes.

    The booking playbook

    1. Open an Aeroplan account.
    2. Search Air India First Class award inventory on aircanada.com (Aeroplan) for the dates you want. If nothing shows, set a daily alert.
    3. Pick your feeder. If you hold Axis Magnus Burgundy, that is your best ratio. If you hold Atlas, that is your best volume play. Infinia / Diners Black / BizBlack is the fallback. Bonvoy is the slow-build long-game source.
    4. Transfer in chunks that match the award. If you are routing through Bonvoy, transfer in 60K blocks to capture the 5K bonus per block.
    5. Ticket immediately when space is available. Pay the modest taxes.

If you want this layered into a personal points-and-cards plan, that is exactly what a Strategy Session delivers.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer Amex Membership Rewards to Aeroplan from India?

No. American Express Membership Rewards in India does not have Aeroplan as a transfer partner. That partnership exists in the United States but not in the Indian Amex programme. The only Indian feeders into Aeroplan are Axis Magnus Burgundy, Axis Atlas, HDFC Infinia / Diners Black / BizBlack, and Marriott Bonvoy.

Is Air India still a Star Alliance member?

Yes. Despite the Vistara merger and Tata-era restructuring, Air India remains a Star Alliance member. Star Alliance partner programmes including Aeroplan, United MileagePlus and ANA Mileage Club can ticket Air India award seats.

Why use Aeroplan over Maharaja Club?

Aeroplan often prices Air India First Class lower than the home programme, and Aeroplan's stopover and routing rules are more flexible. Aeroplan's distance-based award chart caps long-haul First at attractive rates that Maharaja Club's dynamic pricing frequently exceeds.

How does the new A350 First Class compare?

The A350 First Class with refreshed seat, refreshed catering and new soft product is competitive with Etihad and ANA First on the same routes. It is Air India's halo product and is the seat to target on this redemption.
