Return on Spend (ROS): The Only Credit Card Metric That Matters in India
What Return on Spend means
Return on Spend, or ROS, is the cash-equivalent rupee value you extract from every rupee you put on a credit card, after fees. It is the single number that determines whether a credit card is worth holding.
A 1% cashback card has an ROS of 1%. A premium points card with a 50,000 joining fee, used poorly, can have an ROS below 1%. The same card, routed correctly and redeemed against a transfer partner sweet spot, can deliver an ROS of 6 to 12%.
The formula
ROS = (Cash-equivalent rupee value of redemptions − all fees) ÷ Total spend
The cash-equivalent value is the price you would have paid in cash for the exact same flight, hotel night, or product, minus the cash component you still had to pay (taxes, fees, surcharges).
ROS benchmarks in India
- Below 1%: you are losing money on the annual fee. Close the card or change how you use it.
- 1 to 2%: cashback territory. Acceptable for utility spends on a no-frills card.
- 3 to 5%: well-routed premium card with reasonable redemption discipline.
- 6 to 10%: what a structured Strategy Session typically unlocks for a points-literate Indian cardholder.
- 10%+: Sovereign-tier outcomes, usually involving a specific premium-cabin redemption or a transfer bonus arbitrage.
ROS by card, real-world ranges
- HDFC Infinia: 3.3% on base spends. When SmartBuy is used for hotel/flight / gift vouchers, the reward rate jumps 5X to 16.5%. When points are transferred to a partner for a premium cabin sweet spot, this can extend even further.
- Axis Magnus Burgundy: 4.8% to 24% range, depending on transfer partner mix and spend categories.
- Axis Atlas: 4% to 10% on travel-coded spend with disciplined transfers to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer / Aeroplan / Japan Airlines.
- Amex Platinum Charge Card: 2.5% on base spends, and 25% on specific merchants like Air India flights via Reward Multiplier; benefits stack (lounge, hotel status, FHR credits) push effective ROS higher for heavy travellers.
- HSBC Premier: 3% base rewards. 18% on flights and 36% on hotels.
How to improve your ROS
- Route spend by category, not by habit. Foreign spend goes on the lowest-markup card. Hotel and flight spend goes on the highest-multiplier card. Utilities go on the card with the best surcharge waiver.
- Stop redeeming inside the bank portal. Bank portal redemptions are almost always the worst-value option. Transfer to an airline or hotel partner instead.
- Pick one premium cabin redemption per year and design backwards. ROS is dramatically higher on a Singapore Suites or Qatar QSuites award than on an economy ticket.
- Do the math on the renewal fee, every year. A card whose ROS is 1.5% is not worth a 12,500 renewal fee unless you spend 8 lakh+ on it.
If you want to translate this framework into an actual portfolio plan, that is exactly what a Strategy Session delivers: your real cards, your real spend, and a written plan to push your ROS into the 6 to 10% range.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Return on Spend in India?
1% is the cashback floor. 3 to 5% is achievable on a well-routed Infinia or Atlas. 6 to 12% is what a structured Strategy Session typically unlocks once spend is routed across the right cards and points are transferred to the right partner for the right cabin.
How do I calculate the cash-equivalent value of a point?
Take the cash price of the redemption you would actually book, subtract the taxes and fees you pay on the award, and divide by the points spent. That gives you the rupee value per point. Multiply by your annual points earn to get the rupee value of your card.
Does Return on Spend include the joining and renewal fee?
Yes. ROS is a net number. Subtract every fee, including the joining fee, the renewal fee, the foreign currency markup, and any GST.
Why don't most Indian cardholders track ROS?
Because banks report points earned, not rupees extracted. The translation from points to rupees only happens at the redemption end, and most cardholders never close the loop. ROS forces you to close it.
